This course focuses on different ways that a common good can be defined and the relationship between that common good and individual members of society. We will pay particular attention to the role of religion in defining and achieving a common good and in shaping the behavior of individuals in society. We will explore these issues through examinations of the relationships between religious ethics and sociopolitical life in the contemporary U.S. and globally. In this process, we will look at a number of concrete problems, including economic justice, the environment, and race relations, as well as more general and theoretical issues concerning the relationships between individuals and society.
