This course will study the origin, doctrines and development of Buddhism in India (its birthplace) and beyond. The course will address the specific teachings and doctrine outlined by the Buddha, as well as the subsequent development and systematization of that doctrine--namely, the lesser and greater traditions of the Theravada and Mahayana, respectively--as these took shape in South and East Asia. During the latter part of the course, special attention will be given to the topics of women in Buddhism, tantric Buddhism and Zen.
