This course will examine the major religious traditions of Japan--Shinto and Buddhism--in historical development and contemporary cultural context. These traditions were mutually influential, and together with Confucian morality, Taoist magic, folk traditions, ancestor worship, Christianity, and the new religions, comprise the richly syncretic religious practices and beliefs of the Japanese people. We will consider both the formal doctrinal systems and case studies of actual practice.
