History of Modern Christian Thought

This lecture and discussion survey begins with close study
of Luther, Calvin and the Protestant radicals. Relations
between early modern culture and religion in the 17th
century are explored. Enlightenment, romantic, existential
and postmodern expressions and critiques of Christianity
will be examined in major thinkers from the 18th to 20th
century. Readings from Wesley, Edwards, Hume, Kierkegaard,
Nietzsche, Barth, Tillich, etc., will be included.

Wesley's JOURNAL, and the writings of Jonathan Edwards.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Weekly reading for discussion.
Possible midterm.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Several short
papers on major thinkers and issues.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting
or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the
first class, they will be dropped from the class list.
NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form
to the Registrar's Office.
