This course examines the many ways in which religion is
understood and practiced by a variety of communities as well
as by scholars in the field of religious studies. The three
divisions of the curriculum of the department--critical
approaches, religious traditions, religion and society--are
used to describe and analyze religious experiences of the
sacred, the place of ritual in the formation of communities,
the ways in which practice and performance generate
conviction and belief, and the significance of myth and
religious narrative in providing schemes of meaning.
