Culture and Psychopathology
PSYC356 FA

Crosslistings: WMST234

Not Currently Offered

This course will explore the role of culture in the development of psychopathology, in the conceptualization of psychopathology and in the provision of clinical services. Cross-cultural studies will be used to highlight the importance of culture as a variable in the etiology of abnormal behavior. The course will consider the literature on cultural bias implicit in much of contemporary research on psychopathology. It will focus particularly on minority groups in the United States and we will explore how current theorizing, research practice and clinical service policies need to be reformulated to achieve more valid conceptualizations and interventions for psychopathology in these minority populations.
