In this study of periodic motion as applied to mechanical systems, damped and forced harmonic motion, coupled oscillators, normal modes, the wave equation, and Fourier series and integrals are among the topics discussed. The physical principles and mathematical techniques developed in this course are central to many subsequent courses, particularly quantum mechanics (PHYS214, 315) and radiation and optics (PHYS325). An important component of this course is to develop the ability to use Mathcad or an equivalent package to graph expressions, solve equations, and obtain numerical solutions to differential equations. Students who have taken PHYS113 and 116 are advised to continue with this as their next physics course.
