This course in classical mechanics is for well-prepared students who feel that the general physics course PHYS113 is too similar in level to their high school course and who would prefer a review of classical mechanics that is rigorous and mathematically sophisticated. Calculus and vector analysis are used extensively.

Two exams, weekly problem sets, and perhaps some quizzes.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Requirement: A good high school physics course (such as an advanced placement course) and a knowledge of differential and integral calculus. Normally, students taking PHYS115 will continue in the second half of the semester with PHYS215, Special Relativity. Both this course and PHYS113 are standard routes into the major. This course is taught the first half of the semester; the last class meets on Friday, October 23. NOTE: Students wishing to withdraw from this class must do so by Friday, October 23.
