This course in classical mechanics is for well-prepared
students who feel that the general physics course PHYS113 is
too similar in level to their high school course and who
would prefer a review of classical mechanics that is
rigorous and mathematically sophisticated. Calculus and
vector analysis are used extensively.
MAJOR READINGS
D. Kleppner & R.J. Kolenkow, AN
INTRODUCTION TO MECHANICS
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Two exams, weekly problem
sets, and perhaps some quizzes.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Requirement: A good
high school physics course (such as an advanced placement
course) and a knowledge of differential and integral
calculus. Normally, students taking PHYS115 will continue

Relativity. Both this course and PHYS113 are standard routes
into the major.
This course is taught the first half of the semester; the
last class meets on Friday, October 23.
