This is a seminar devoted to a close and critical reading of major texts by Augustine of Hippo. Attention will be given to Augustine's cultural milieu in late antiquity, to his philosophical orientation in Neo-Platonism, and to his religious significance as a fountainhead of Christian theology and spirituality. Major topics will be the soul, God, and history.

There will be several short papers during the term, and a longer one (8-10pp.) at the end.
