This is a seminar devoted to a close and critical reading of
major texts by Augustine of Hippo. Attention will be given
to Augustine's cultural milieu in late antiquity, to his
philosophical orientation in Neo-Platonism, and to his
religious significance as a fountainhead of Christian
theology and spirituality. Major topics will be the soul,
God, and history.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
There will be several short
papers during the term, and a longer one (8-10pp.) at the
end.

Unless
preregistered students attend the first class meeting or
communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first
class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE:
Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the
Registrar's Office.
