Topics in this critical examination of issues debated by the early Confucian, Daoist, and Mohist philosophers, will include the nature of normative authority and value, the importance of ritual, and the relation between personal and social goods.

MAJOR READINGS

Readings will all be in translation, and
will include ANALECTS, MOZI, MENCIUS, LAOZI, ZHUANGZI, AND
XUNZI.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Four papers will be required: two brief expositions of a position or argument and two longer, critical discussions.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

No prior knowledge of China or philosophy is assumed. Careful reading of each day's assignments and participation and performance in these areas will affect grades. Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
