Philosophical Classics IV: 20th-Century Analytic Philosophy

This course will study of selected writings by the
antispeculative, logic- and language-oriented thinkers who
have shaped 20th-century Anglo-American
philosophy--including Peirce, Frege, Moore, Russell,
Wittgenstein, Carnap, Quine, Ryle, and Austin.
MAJOR READINGS
Selections by Peirce, Frege, G. E. Moore,
B. Russell, Wittgenstein, Carnap, C. L. Stevenson, Hempel,
Quine, Ryle, Austin, Strawson, and Hare are normally
included.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Probably about 6 to 8 precis
on readings, occasional class reports, and one or two
papers.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
The prerequisites
may be waived in certain cases by permission of instructor.
A prior or concurrent course in logic, while not a
prerequisite, would be very useful.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting
or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the
first class, they will be dropped from the class list.
NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form
to the Registrar's Office.
