This one semester course in the musical traditions of Mande
(Maninka and Mandinka) peoples of western Africa consists of
three separate ensembles: jembe and dundun drums; balafons
(xylophones); and guitars. Kora (harp) will be taught on a
limited basis. Students will also learn about the culture in
which the music lives through readings, recordings, and
video viewings. Audition and permission of instructor are
required at the first class. The ensemble will present
public performances.

Attendance is
required.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting
or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the
first class, they will be dropped from the class list.
