This course concentrates on the vocabulary of improvisation
in the African American classical tradition. Rhythmic,
melodic, and harmonic knowledge will be approached through
the study of scales, chords, modes, ear training and
transcription. Theoretical information will be applied to
instruments in a workshop setting. Audition and permission
of instructor are required at the first class. Intensive
practice and listening are required. This course may not be
repeated for credit.
MAJOR READINGS
Two Texts by David Baker, JAZZ IMPROVISATION
and EAR TRAINING FOR JAZZ MUSICIANS as well as other texts
such as POP AND JAZZ HARMONY and CONTEMPORARY SONG WRITING
by D. Ricigliano.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Bi-weekly drills and two large
composition and/or score analysis projects.

INTERESTED STUDENTS
SHOULD ATTEND THE FIRST CLASS, WITH A DROP/ADD SLIP.
Students should have familiarity with basic music vocabulary
and analysis as per Music 101. The course is geared toward
committed jazz students. Permission of instructor is based
on assessment of skills and commitment. Unless preregistered
students attend the first class meeting or communicate
directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they
will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must
still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's
Office.
