This introduction to the rich performing arts and culture of
Indonesia focuses on the genres of Java and Bali. The
approach will be descriptive and comparative, integrating
music, theater, and dance. A principal theme will be the
differing experiences of decolonization and modernization in
two neighboring and related traditional cultures.
