An overview of beliefs, traditions and techniques
associated with the use of music to promote human
well-being: physical, psychological, emotional, spiritual.
In addition to material normally included under "music
therapy," the course encompasses exoteric and esoteric
practices from many traditions. The intent is to be
maximally inclusive.
The course is a pure seminar. Each participant conducts a
term-long investigation of a particular problem and of
music-therapeutic means for solving that problem. Most class
meetings will consist of reports by the participants on
their investigations and of critical discussions of the
works in progress. The goal will be to produce a book-length
series of original essays representive of the broad range of
the field of music and health.
Individuals who have themselves experienced the therapeutic
value of music or who have conditions which they believe
might benefit from music therapy are especially welcome in
the course.
MAJOR READINGS
Extracts from published material are
distributed as the need arises. Students are encouraged to
raid the libraries, and one of the jobs of the seminar will
be to put together an extensive bibliography. Written
records of the students' research will routinely be made
available to all members of the seminar.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
No examinations. Term paper.
Attendance mandatory.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Unless
preregistered students attend the first class meeting or
communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first
class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE:
Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the
Registrar's Office.
Permission of instructor required. Interested students
should arrange an interview with Mr. Barlow during
preregistration. They should come to that interview prepared
to explain the nature and background of their interest in
the relationship between music and health.
