Music of the Caribbean

The impact that the musics of the Carribean have had on the
rest of the world which is greatly out of proportion to the
relatively small land mass and population of the West
Indies. This course will explore contemporary music
practices of the Caribbean (both traditional and
popular/commercial), historical antecedents, the role of
music in everyday life, and the relationship of music to the
social and political history of the region. Focus on the
musics of Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti, the Dominican Republic,
Puerto Rico and the French Antilles.

There will be two exams, one
term project/paper and a number of short weekly assignments.

Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the
