Operas from Monteverdi to the 20th century will be studied
from vocal scores, orchestral scores, recordings and live
performances. Special attention will be given to those
properties that make opera viable on the stage. Particular
operas studied will include THE MAGIC FLUTE by Mozart,
CARMEN by Bizet, FOUR SAINTS IN THREE ACTS by Virgil Thomson
DON CARLO by Verdi and THE RING OF THE NIEBELUNG by Wagner.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Students must be
able to read music and be willing to travel. A good
background in theory is highly desirable, but the instructor
is willing to have dedicated students who do not have it.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class
meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to
the first class, they will be dropped from the class list.
NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form
to the Registrar's Office.
