This course is an introduction to musical styles, performance practices and ideas about music in 19th- and 20th-century Europe and the United States. The course will deal principally with art music.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Quizzes and final exam; one long paper or two shorter papers.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Required: either MUSC101 or its equivalent (music-reading ability where possible) and preferably some experience with music analysis. Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
