Medieval and Renaissance Music
MUSC221 SP

Crosslistings: MDST221

Not Currently Offered

This course is an introduction, using the techniques of musicology, music theory, and cultural history, to the styles and performance practices of the musics of the European medieval and Renaissance periods. In particular, we analyze and discuss and perform a Gregorian Mass, a 13th-century motet, the Kyrie from the Mass of Our Lady by Guillaume Machaut, two chansons by Anthonello and Dufay, a Sanctus by Obrecht, a lied by Senfl, and a Kyrie by di Lasso. The students learn to read and to perform these works from the original notations. We make our own music, and we use no recordings. We spend some of our time discussing the relationships of music theory to arithmetic, astronomy and theology, but our focus is on the specific works mentioned above.
