This course will consider the principal features of the instrumental and song traditions of Irish traditional music. The main song types and dance-music forms, such as the reel, jig and hornpipe, will be discussed. The course will also trace the history, to the present day, of performance practice in Irish traditional music beginning with the issue of the first commercial recordings of Irish traditional music in America in the first decades of this century. The primary focus of the course, however, will be the development, since 1959, of so-called group-playing in Irish traditional music. Ever since composer Sean O'Riada invented the genre almost 40 years ago, it has become one of the most popular ensemble formats among Irish traditional musicians, and groups such as The Chieftains and Altan now enjoy significant international success. The historical development and musical characteristics of group-playing will be discussed with an emphasis on social and musical change.
