Topics in Biochemistry: Control of Gene Expression

This half-semester course will meet for the first half of the semester only. It will be followed at the same time and place by a course that will meet for the second half of the semester only entitled Genetics of Self Proliferation, MB&B299, although students may register for MB&B298 independent of MB&B299. This seminar-type course will use original research papers to explore the strategies used by eukaryotic cells to turn on groups of genes during differentiation and in response to various physiological situations. The experimental approaches that have proved most useful to date and are likely to yield new insights in the future will be emphasized. Students must withdraw from this course by October 23.

MAJOR READINGS

From the literature as needed.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

A one-and-a-half hour final exam.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

The instructor will present some introductory information after which the findings of research papers will be presented by students.
