In this introduction to Latin literature of Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, topics discussed will include the development of the Latin language, medieval biography and hagiography, the representation of the individual, the theme of love in the Latin literature of the Middle Ages.

MAJOR READINGS

THE PASSION OF PERPETUA
Hrothsvitha, PAFNUTIUS, DULCITIUS
Selections from the works of the poet Venantius Fortunatus,
historians GREGORY OF TOURS and BEDE, Einhard's LIFE OF
CHARLEMAGNE, William Fitzstephen's LIFE OF THOMAS BECKET,
the correspondence of ABELARD and HELOISE and the lyric and
satirical poetry of the ARCHPOET the CAMBRIDGE SONGS and the
CARMINA BURANA.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

One take-home exam, one short paper, and one long paper, plus in-class discussion and reports. About 5 pages of Latin to prepare each week, and reading in secondary texts.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Students should normally have taken a 200 level Latin course or the equivalent. In doubtful cases consult the instructor. Regular attendance is expected.
