Horace and Latin Lyric
LAT 241 SP

Using readings from THE ODES, employing a variety of
critical approaches to Horatian Lyric, this course will
include discussion of lyric poetry as a genre and
examination of comparable classical and postclassical
texts. Special attention will be paid to critical
methodologies in close reading of selected poems and of
secondary literature.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
A sequence of three short
papers, as exercises in practical criticism and a longer
final paper; occasional in-class reports; reading
assignments (in Latin) each week.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Students should
normally have taken at least one Latin course at the 200-
level or the equivalent. In doubtful cases, consult
instructor.
