This course will examine how the religious practices and beliefs of communities of Asian descent affect their cultural practices and American culture in general. It will survey the major tenets of Buddhism, Islam, Hinduism and Christianity, and consider to what extent these faiths have changed as a result of being part of the American religious environment. The class will consider such issues as the effects of Orientalism and exoticism on the public and private perceptions of the practices, the way that religion affects public and political life, and the methods of religious education.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

One short book review paper (8 pages) and one major research paper.
