Islam has played an active role in Middle Eastern history not only as a system of religious beliefs, but as an ideology espousing political action as well. This course will examine the various ways in which Islam has functioned in revolutionary situations in the 20th century as well its relationship to various social revolutions. In particular the question of women's liberation will be studied to see whether and how a distinctly Islamic approach to such questions has emerged.
