This course is a study of the problems of definition and of methodology in European social and intellectual history. The course emphasizes a systematic discussion of anthropological, economic, philosophical, political and social theories in western Europe during the 19th and 20th centuries. It will present problems in French history, followed by comparison of the French example to Great Britain, Germany, Spain, Italy and others in modern development.
