During the last two centuries, the mass movement of human beings in Asia has increased to an unparalleled scale. This course examines the diasporas of Southeast Asia in this time frame, and asks how these movements have intersected with rising "criminal activities" in the region. Period literature, historical sources, and anthropological writings are used to analyze in particular the growth of smuggling networks, drug-running, and the trafficking of women.
