Italy and Spain in the 20th Century

This seminar offers a comparative analysis of aspects of
Italian and Spanish history in this century. Consideration
will be given to economic underdevelopment, regionalisms,
the role of the Catholic Church, the failure of liberal
political systems, the emergence of fascism, the regimes of
Mussolini and Franco and the contemporary political
situation. Emphasis will be given to the Fascist regime in
Italy and to the Civil War in Spain.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Four papers, approximately
5-6 pages, on questions to be assigned; weekly reports on
work in progress; and a research paper.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Readings will be
in English, but students with a command of Spanish and/or
Italian will be expected to explore readings in one or both
languages. Preparation of the research paper will
constitute approximately one-third of a student's work in
the course. COL students who wish to take this course may
receive a Pass/Fail grade.
