This course will survey the history of the United States
over the past century. We will discuss this nation's
economy, society, culture, and above all, politics.
Throughout the course we will explore the meaning of
democracy in America. I will be giving lectures but will
also devote entire sessions to discussions. Much of the
reading will be based on primary documents. The unifying
theme will be the rise, triumph, and decline of liberalism
in America. Students who are considering a major in history
or would like to develop a historical dimension to
complement their study of other topics are encouraged to
take this class.
