This course will examine the intellectual currents that shaped American culture from the colonial period through the Civil War. It will include close readings of texts illustrative of Puritanism, the Enlightenment, Revolutionary republicanism, Jeffersonian and Jacksonian democracy, transcendentalism and reform.

Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Thomas Paine, James Madison,
Jefferson, Frederick Douglass, Emerson, Jackson, Thoreau,
Poe, Melville, Charles Finney, Whitman, Harriet B. Stowe
and Lincoln, among others.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

One hour quiz, several short papers and a final exam.
