Japan is the first non-Western country to have transformed
itself into a modern economic and (at least before 1945)
military superpower. The purpose of this course is to gain
an understanding of how Japan changed itself from a closed
country at the beginning of the 19th century to an
empire-holding military giant by the late 1930s, to an
economic superpower from the ashes of World War II.
MAJOR READINGS
Will include numerous xeroxed papers,
several texts and novels.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Map quiz, midterm, final,
three short papers.
