This course will explore the experiences of women, representations of those experiences, and the implications of gender difference in 19th- and 20th-century Western Europe (with particular emphasis on England and France). Topics will include gender and public life; the family and sexuality; industrialism and women's work; medical discourse and deviant women; technology and consumption; the emergence of feminism; the historical experiences of African, Asian, and Latin American women in colonized societies and Europe; and sexual politics in the European Union. We will consider especially differences among women and will examine the intersections of feminist theory, studies of immigration and race relations in Europe, and the history of women.
