This course will examine some of the intellectual, social
and psychological changes in society in the 16th and 17th
centuries that have led historians to call this the period
of the Scientific Revolution. Much of the time, class
periods will be devoted to class discussion; other classes
will feature lectures designed to help you place the
readings in context. Most of our readings will be from
classic works, translated from the original into English.
MAJOR READINGS
Include works by Ambroise Pare, William
Harvey, Rene Descartes, Galileo Galilei, and others.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Several written assignments
and papers. No final written examination.
