This course presents the history of those Latin American nations which have a stong indigenous heritage. The course will emphasize 20th and 20th century indigenista movements, social issues, and contemporary political revolutions but will also cover the colonial period and the historical construction of Indian identities.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Midterm exam, final paper or exam, two writing exercises, two (4-6 page) papers.
