Class discussion will focus on major concerns of current
Homeric scholarship, among them theories of oral
composition, Homeric religion and the Homeric hero, and the
ILIAD epic as an epic of war.

Continuous readings in Greek
and English of the ILIAD; three in-class tests in language
and three short papers on literary topics.
