Latin America: Development and Democracy GOVT385 FA

Economic development and the consolidation of democracy are Latin America's two contemporary challenges. This seminar uses the case-study approach to explore how these challenges might be met. We address the following questions: Can the Amazon rain forest be preserved without unduly obstructing Brazilian economic development? What impact will NAFTA have on Mexico's urban and rural poor? Do Latin America's newly industrializing countries have anything to learn from South Korea and Taiwan? What is the best way to deal with the drug-trafficking problem? What accounts for the extraordinary success of democracy in the English-speaking Caribbean? How can civilians best gain control over the military in Latin America's new democracies? Can those who violated human rights during military dicatorships ever be brought to justice? Were the Sandinistas good or bad for Nicaragua? How have women's movements participated in the democratization of Latin America?
