Politics and political development in Japan and Korea since the impact of Western imperialism in the late 19th century have been tumultuous. Japan was the first nation outside the West to modernize--to industialize, to enact a constitution, to develop proto-democratic politics, and to become a great power. Since 1945 Japan has been the only non-Western nation to have a fully democratic member of the postindustrial First World. Colonized by Japan from 1910 to 1945, divided since 1948, and subject to a devastating civil war from 1950 to 1953, Korea remains divided between a communist North Korea and a capitalist South Korea. Since 1987 South Korea has begun an impressive transformation from authoritarian rule to democratic government. What are the similarities and contrasts in politics between these two East Asian nations?
