In this survey of contemporary West European states and
societies, primary emphasis will be on Britain, France,
Germany, and Italy, with some attention to other European
countries and to the European Union. Readings and
discussions will focus on topics such as the institutional
principles and political processes of each country, the rise
and decline of class-based politics, and recent
developments, including the politicization of race and the
resurgence of xenophobic movements and of the extreme right.

Midterm, short papers, final
paper.

Unless
preregistered students attend the first class meeting or
communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first
class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE:
Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the
Registrar's Office.
