On Writing, Self and Other in Contemporary German Literature

Recent developments in German literature have clustered
around a new questioning and positioning of the relationship
between writing and existence, society and art, politics
and self. These and other issues will be explored through
and in the works of contemporary German word artists
(Schriftsteller).
MAJOR READINGS
Among the many texts read will be works
published since 1980 by Adolf Muschg, Paul Nizon, Christa
Wolf, Peter Schneider, Elfriede Jelinek, Irmtraud Morgner,
and others. Our focus will be on prose works and, where
available, poetics by the authors read.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
No examinations; short papers,
an oral report and one final research paper.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Unless
preregistered students attend the first class meeting or
communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first
class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE:
Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the
Registrar's Office.
