Austrian Literature 1898-1938 (Oesterreichische Literatur 1898-1938)

This course will examine important authors and other
cultural figures who were active between the turn of the
century and the ANSCHLUSS. Particular attention will be
paid to the creative interaction among literature,
psychology, and the arts before 1914. Specific topics will
include the prevalence of the "Habsburg Myth," the Jewish
contribution to Austrian culture, literary responses to
World War I, the rise of psychoanalysis, and the dialectic
between ornament and asceticism in the arts.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
One class report, three short
essays (3-5 pp.) and one research paper (10-12 pp.)

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting
or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the
first class, they will be dropped from the class list.
NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form
to the Registrar's Office.
