What is love? How is it portrayed in German literature from the Middle Ages to the present? We will examine how authors depict love in poetry, prose, and the drama, and how these representations are developed within the contexts of genre and literary history. Attention will be paid to the way the social and historical dimensions of gender relationships manifest themselves in literary works.

MAJOR READINGS

A selection of excerpts from major works by
the following authors: Gottfried von Strassburg,
Grimmelshausen, Lessing, Goethe, Schiller, Kleist,
Hoelderlin, Novalis, Droste-Huelshoff, Hebbel, Grillparzer,
Fontane, Rilke, Thomas Mann, Trakl, Benn, Hauptmann,
Reventlow, Kafka, Frisch, Handke, Wolf, Grass, Frischmuth.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Oral reports, one final research paper.

Active participation in class discussion expected.
