A study of women protagonists in 19th-century German novels and novellas by female and male authors. We will examine how authors portray women who cross the established social and emotional boundaries of their world, and how their transgressions either subvert or reinforce the values of the dominant society. Close reading of the texts and some general background readings are required. Films and videos will be incorporated whenever available.

Adalbert Stifter, BRIGITTA Theodor Fontane, EFFI BRIEST and selected works by Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach, Louise von Francois, Lou Andreas-Salome, Hermann Sudermann, and Franziska von Reventlow. EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS: Reading journal, oral report, one final research paper. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS: Active participation in class discussion expected.
