The relationship between Hollywood and Germany has always
been both uneasy and productive. This course will examine
the well-known interaction between the master of the postwar
melodrama and the enfant terrible of the New German Cinema.
Initially, we will follow the lead of Fassbinder's famous
essay, "Imitation of Life: On the Films of Douglas Sirk,"
and consider the films that ostensibly influenced the
young German director most immediately.
Special focus will be on FEAR EATS THE SOUL, Fassbinder's
provocative remake of ALL THAT HEAVEN ALLOWS. We will,
however, also look at some of Fassbinder's important films
before his encounter with Sirk as well as some of Sirk's
German films.
MAJOR READINGS
Rainer Werner Fassbinder, LOVE IS COLDER
