The Early German Cinema 1918-1933

An investigation of major silent and sound films of the
Weimar era, with particular attention to the early careers
of Fritz Lang, G. W. Pabst, and Murnau. The course will
include extensive readings in film theory and criticism
(Kracauer, Benjamin, Arnheim, Brecht) and in the literature
(Brecht, Doeblin) of the period.

Films by Fritz Lang, F.W. Murnau, G.W.
Pabst, W. Ruttmann, L. Riefenstahl, S. Dudow, and others.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
One oral presentation, two
short essays (3-5 pp.) and 1 research paper (10-12 pp.).
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Participants in
the course should have a general interest in German history
and culture and be prepared to handle substantial reading
assignments.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting
or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the
first class, they will be dropped from the class list.
NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form
to the Registrar's Office.
