GERM216

Introduction to the Interpretation of Texts, Literary and Nonliterary
GERM216 FA

Not Currently Offered

This fifth-semester course, conducted in German, is meant to provide a logical continuation of GERM214. Emphasis will be put on the interpretation of different kinds of texts. The texts to be read and analyzed will be divided between purely literary works (poetry, drama, and prose) and, to a lesser extent, expository works from areas of interest represented by the class. This course counts toward the German major but is specifically intended also as a course for nonmajors.

MAJOR READINGS

A) Literary readings will include: 1) a
representative selection of poetry from the German
Classical, Romantic, later 19th- and early 20th-century
periods; 2) several dramas; 3) novellas and short stories.

B) Expository readings will include: articles from DIE ZEIT
and other contemporary journals and cultural publications.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Approximately five short analytical papers and a term project. Quizzes only if necessary. No final examination.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

The course is designed for: 1) students with language facility equivalent to four semesters of college German who intend eventually to take courses in German literature at the 300 level but who would benefit from a semester's instruction in methodology and analysis. 2) Those with the same four-semester preparation who want an additional course but do not intend to pursue German literature further. 3) Students planning to apply to the Wesleyan Program in Germany who have completed GERM214 and feel they will benefit from a pre-300-level course before going abroad.
