From its inception in late 16th century Italy, the operatic tradition has served as a multidimensional creative force that both reflects and examines the cultural context out of which it has emerged. This FYI course will explore 10 operas written to Italian texts, through (obligatory) weekly screening of interesting recent productions of each of them, a diverse set of critical readings, class discussion and writing assignments.

A course reader will encompass selections dealing with each
of the operas as well as a series of readings about the
operatic tradition from widely varying critical
perspectives.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Five short (2 page) essays and one longer (5-8 page) final writing project.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
