From its inception in late 16th century Italy, the
operatic tradition has served as a multidimensional creative
force that both reflects and examines the cultural context
out of which it has emerged. This FYI course will explore
10 operas written to Italian texts, through (obligatory)
weekly screening of interesting recent productions of each
of them, a diverse set of critical readings, class
discussion and writing assignments.
