This course presents an in-depth examination of the work of
a major formalist from the beginning of his career to the
end. Emphasis will be on detailed analysis of the
relationship between form and content. Students will
examine various theoretical approaches to the work and do
their own analyses of the individual films on a shot-by-shot
basis. Comparisons to other major figures such as Otto
Preminger and Fritz Lang will be included.

Course restricted
to junior and senior film majors. Permission of
instructor required. Course fee: $40. Enrollment limited to
24.
There will be two weekly screenings (plus extras)
Unless preregistered students attend the first class
meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior
to the first class, they will be dropped from the class
list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add
form to the Registrar's Office.
