The opening lectures will present a background of Hollywood history (studio system, technological developments, etc.), as well as a specific history of the musical genre (Busby Berkeley, Astaire/Rogers, Freed Unit). The remainder of the course will examine various critical approaches to the musical (genre, auteur, etc.), as well as the contributions of individual stars, producers, directors, composers, art directors, with the emphasis on directorial style.

Major paper. Oral presentation. Final exam.

Biweekly screenings, with extra screenings. Course fee: $40. Permission of instructor required. Film majors only. Enrollment limited to 20.
