Experimental Minority Poetry

Opening the canon has usually meant including ethnic writers
whose work conforms to an acceptable (mainstream)
style/worldview. We will consider why experimental minority
poets have been overlooked and how, through formal
innovation, they grapple (or do not) with issues of race.
The course will pay particular focus on African American and
Asian American poets.
MAJOR READINGS
Poetry by Aime Cesaire, Langston Hughes,
Amiri Baraka, Nathaniel Mackey, Aldon Nielson, Harryette
Mullen, Sadikichi Hartmann, Wen I-To, John Yau, Mei-mei
Berssenbrugge, Theresa Cha, Tan Lin, and others; critical
readings by some of these poets and other critics.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Two papers, class
presentations.

Unless
preregistered students attend the first class meeting or
communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first
class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE:
Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the
Registrar's Office.
