The Child, the Postcolonial, and the Problem of Authority

Among other effects, imperialism destabilized established routes from youth to adulthood, from ignorance/apprenticeship to knowledge, wisdom, and the authority of age. Imperialism and modernity seem to accord authority to youth, childish ignorance to age. This course will examine construction of childhood and authority in, among other texts, those listed below.

This course meets the English department's historical knowledge requirement. Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
